Chapter Ten

Tig’s life suddenly seemed to be moving at full speed, after months of being stuck in stasis. When she wasn’t teaching art, or at the gym, she was taking photos, having dinner with Ame and Dana, or out doing something with Ollie. He’d decided that if she wanted active dates, that’s what he was going to provide. They’d been indoor climbing at The Castle, gone hiking, been in a pedalo on the Serpentine, and ridden Boris bikes around Hyde Park. She was exhausted. And exhilarated. And pretty darn irritated that a week and a half had gone by without a kiss happening again. Had she been bad? Was he embarrassed? The man was damn confusing, and all she could do was pretend that she didn’t want to kiss him either. That she wasn’t attracted to him, her heart didn’t flutter just a little when he held her hand, or kissed her cheek, or that one moment when she’d complained about her foot hurting and he’d picked her up and tried to carry her. Of course, she’d wriggled free and told him to stop being an idiot. But, still.

He’d told her to meet him at the entrance to Primrose Hill. As Tig walked along, taking in the little shops and restaurants that lined one of her favourite places, she realised how much there was to do, to try. Ollie was standing at the gate, looking as gorgeous as usual, with a tightly fitted T-shirt, and his sunglasses on, even though the light was fading. He was holding a huge picnic basket, and a red and white checked blanket that looked like an Italian tablecloth. He waved, and she felt her heart shudder a little. ‘Get a grip,’ she told herself firmly, and bounded over to meet him.

‘Okay, I have to admit, you’re pretty damn good at this,’ Tig smiled as they sat atop Primrose Hill on a picnic blanket, with an actual picnic basket full of homemade goodies. ‘A little cold, though.’

‘Ahah!’ Ollie produced a hoodie from behind him. ‘I plan for every eventuality!’

‘Officially impressed,’ she grinned, putting it on.

‘Here.’ He handed her a can of cider, then clinked it against his own. ‘Cheers.’

‘Cheers,’ Tig grinned. ‘Look at this, it’s not even fancy cider, and it’s in a can. Coming down to the level of the non-pretentious food lover?’

‘Maybe the taste of fizzy piss really accompanies the food I’ve prepared so pretentiously.’ Ollie stuck out his tongue.

Tig looked out onto her favourite skyline. It was a clear night, still pretty light, and it wasn’t really that cold. It was still summer, after all. She just tended to get too excited about being warm during the day, and forgot that they were still in England. Besides, if she was cold Ollie might huddle in for warmth, which seemed like a deliciously terrible idea.

‘You know, this is one of my favourite places.’ She hugged her knees and rested her head on them. ‘Even with the changing skyline, and the never-ending cranes, it still feels like … home.
